Several are running

GARFIELD -- Three people are seeking the mayor's seat this year and one seated City Council member faces a challenger.

Running for mayor are Gary Blackburn, Katherine Shook and Dale King.

Blackburn, 68, was elected four years ago. Prior to that, he served two years on the City Council.

Blackburn said he is running again because there's "unfinished business."

"As mayor, I've probably I've probably spent as much time and energy training people to do their jobs." He said he had also recently graduated from water distribution operator school.

Shook, 54, has served as alderman for almost four years.

"If I have the privilege of becoming your mayor, I've got experience managing businesses, I've gotten grants... The mayor's primary responsibility is to do what's best for the residents, not to pursue what I want or my friends but what is best for all the residents of Garfield."

King, 78, former City Council member and former Justice of the Peace on the Benton County Quorum Court, said "a mayor needs to find the problems the people have and put it all together. It all boils down to a management system."
