Just in time to help our local wild birds get ready for winter, children of all ages are invited to make and take a pine cone bird feeder at the Shiloh Museum of Ozark History from 10-11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 20. The program is part of the museum's Shiloh Saturday series for families.

Old-Time Singing School

The Northwest Arkansas Sacred Harp Singers will hold an old-time gospel singing school in the Shiloh Meeting Hall in downtown Springdale from 6:30-8 p.m. Friday, Oct. 26. The school will be taught by Matt Bell of Memphis, Tenn.

"Sacred Harp singing is full of history and tradition that dates back to the 1700s," said Syd Caldwell, a member of the Northwest Arkansas Sacred Harp Singers. "In the songbooks we use, each note on the musical scale is represented by a different geometric shape. In the old days, this was an easy way to teach folks how to read music," explained Caldwell.

The singing school will be followed with an old-fashioned singing convention from 9:30 a.m. - 3:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 27. A potluck dinner will be served at noon.

All activities are free. Registration is not required. The Shiloh Meeting Hall is located at 121 W. Huntsville Avenue; the parking lot is accessible from Price Avenue.
