Track 'Hawks take two more titles

The Blackhawks may need to check into expanding trophy case capacity as the boys and girls varsity track teams swept to another pair of titles competing in the Pioneer Relays in Gentry last week.

The boys had their best point total in a championship meet in school history dwarfing second-place Gentry's point totals 160-106. The girls built up a huge lead over runner-up Siloam Springs, winning the meet 123-118 over the Panthers in spite of heavy late meet scoring by the 6A school.

While the boys had but five first place finishes, the 'Hawks racked up 34 ribbons to pile up a lopsided domination of the meet.

Jordan Witcher was the team's high scorer with 32 points, taking seconds in the 200-meter (23.15), 400-meter (51.35, and long jump (20'5") with a fourth in the 100-meter (11.63). He was also a part of the winning 4x100-meter relay team along with Drew Winn, Connor Escajeda and Cooper Elliot, winning in 44.92. His 4x400-meter relay team of Adam Trammel, Shaed Cates and Escajeda was fifth in 4:00.

Shaed Cates scored 18 points with a first in the 800-meter (2:14.5) and a second in the 1,600 (5:09.5). Kenny Dorsey scored 18 in the hurdles events, winning the 300-meter (42.89) and taking second in the 100-meter (16.78). Justin Koon grabbed the other first place, winning the 100-meter hurdles (16.72) and was fifth in the 300-meter hurdles (44.59).

The 'Hawks' distance relay, the 4x800-meter, took second place with Cates, Smith, Escajeda and Trevor Henry clipping off the eight-lap race in 8:59.8, just a second behind the winning relay from Shiloh.

Zach Woods led the pole vault crew to score 17 points in that event. Woods won with a 12'0" jump with Lance Nunley fifth (10'0") and Aden Christenson sixth (9'6").

Drew Winn ran a season's personal best of 11.36 in the 100-meter for second place and also scored a fifth in the high jump for 14 points including the relay. Connor Escajeda was second in the 200-meter (23.77) and sixth in the 100-meter (11.63) for 13 points with the relay.

Others scoring individually were: Adam Trammel, eighth, 400-meter (55.6); Macquire Smith, third, 800-meter (2:23.5); Colby Norman, fourth, 300-meter hurdles (44.4); Matthew Craig, third, high jump (5'6"); and Zach Humphries, fifth in the shot put (38'3").

Cassidy Mooneyhan and Tori Scrogham scored a 1-2 finish in the pole vault with Mooneyhan jumping 11'0" and Scrogham reaching 8'6".

Jamison Toms picked up three fourth places for 15 points. Toms scored in the 100-meter (13,81), 200-meter (28.45), and long jump (15'6"). Catherine Hooten took a second in the shot put (29'1") with Kynley Burton taking second in the high jump (4'10").
