Discerning real vs. fake news is vital

posted: 03/29/2017 5 a.m.

We, the people, need "the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth." Is that even possible in a world of misinformation and international access to your iPhone through the likes of WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger, Kik, SnapChat or Twitter? Where we once could believe, if it was in the news, it had been verified. Now the "information network," whatever it really consists of, can '"produce the news." The rapid pace of information transfer no longer allows for verification of the story and/or for the source of the story.

Fast forward to March, and the basketball squad matched the ultra-successful football team by battling their way all the way to the state final as well. Timekeeping before electronics

posted: 03/22/2017 5 a.m.

I suppose that for so long as there have been human beings, we have been devising ways of keeping track of time. These days we seem to have gone far toward relying on electronic instruments to tell us the time. I like to remember that for long thousands of years people kept track of time without their electronic gadgets. As the history of humanity goes, electronics is a very new thing, hardly a hundred years out of the thousands and thousands of years that passed before the appearance of electronic instruments like radios, and before the widespread availability of electricity. Timekeeping is a very old thing; and to me there is fascination in thinking of ways people have counted time in the years gone by.

Looking for spring calves part of the fun

posted: 03/08/2017 5 a.m.

Many of the dairymen and cattlemen I have known through the years have been people who farm the land and raise livestock not just as a way of making a living, but because they enjoy working with the animals. Thinking about my own Dad, in the years ago if you had asked him, "Russell, what do you do for a living?" He would probably have said that he milks cows and sells milk for a living. Dairying is a very demanding way of life, with night and day commitments every day without fail. My dad finally gave up the dairy operation in the 1980s after 45 years, but he continued to keep a beef herd and to raise livestock until he was 90 years old. You don't do that when you regard your work as drudgery and look forward to the time when you won't have to do it anymore. You keep on keeping on like that because that's what you enjoy doing with your life and time.

If this sounds like I am supporting Donald Trump's behavior as our nation's leader, you will be missing the point. As noted previously, he got my vote in November because he seemed the more likely of the choices to bring about change in Washington and it is, in my opinion, long overdue. He needs to grow up, think before he opens his mouth -- a hard thing to expect of a very successful New York businessman -- take his cellphone to the nearest trash can, and get serious about the fact that his role is not that of a television personality. If he could at least act a little bit presidential, it would help me believe a lot more of what he says.
