Thursday, Feb. 9, 1967

Shade trees are being planted around Pea Ridge's Elementary School, now in its third year's use. Floyd McGinnis, who is donating labor for the project, just as he did last year for the planting of shrubs at the school, lists the trees as silver maples, sweet gum and sugar maples, with evergreen spreaders also being planted beneath the dining room windows of the structure. The trees and spreaders were purchased by the Pea Ridge PTA.

Pea Ridge voters turned thumbs down on the proposed new county jail and accompanying bond issue -- but the two issues carried county-wide.

Bobby Jines, older son of the Graphic publishers, misjudged the shoulder of a road Saturday and found himself stuck on a Springdale street. His efforts to free his car failed. Along came a pickup truck carrying two Springdale business men, Gerald and Reland Harp. They used their truck to free the car, then put their own shoulders to the vehicle to finish pushing it back onto solid ground again.

Memorial Day, Monday, May 30, has been chosen as the date for the dedication of Pea Ridge's first park. The decision was made by the Pea Ridge Park Commission at its monthly meeting Sunday afternoon at City Hall. The more than nine acre park, which is named Pea Ridge City Park, is located on the Jacket Road (Ark. Hwy. 265).

The seemingly unbeatable Blackhawk junior boys added two more notches to their long winning streak as they took wins over Farmington and St. Paul last week, extending their perfect season mark to 19-0.

Cong. John Paul Hammerschmidt has announced the award of a $65,800 grant to the city of Pea Ridge to finance completion of final engineering, specifications and construction drawings for improvement of the town's sewer facilities. The grant is for 75 percent of the funds needed for "step two" of the grant process.

Acting through an attorney, dissident Pea Ridge School Board member Andy Buck, two students, and four parents notified the Pea Ridge School Board, administrators, one coach, one former superintendent and one former board president that they intend to sue the board and each of the others collectively for $1,500,000.

All members of the Pea Ridge senior girls' basketball team, which played Gentry Jan. 30 in Gentry, are reported to have commended their coach, Larry Walker, and denied that he had been abusive, as charged in a letter received last week from Railey Steele, Gentry.

Lewis A. Brown, 82, Pea Ridge, was listed in serious but stable condition in the intensive care unit of St. Mary's Hospital Rogers, Tuesday following severe injuries suffered when his pickup truck overturned on a sharp curve on Ark. Hwy. 94 in Pea Ridge Saturday morning.

You'd best have no criminal thoughts when around the Patterson Road area. Those residents now have a Neighborhood Watch. Edie Rouffcorn, spokesman for the organization, said, "We're patrolling Patterson Road and Twelve Corners Road and all roads in between." She said, "About 90 percent of the neighborhood" were contact and support the organization.

Blackhawk Salute to Matt Martin, whose overall play improved with more time on the court, and David Stewart for improved scoring and all-around play.

Catherine Yockey of Pea Ridge graduated with a bachelor of science in organizational management from John Brown University in Siloam Springs.

Jennifer and Jeff Carpenter of Garfield announced the birth of their daughter, Hailey Marie, born Jan. 22 at St. Mary's Hospital in Rogers.

Snow began to fall mid-morning Wednesday creating slick roadways. School officials dismissed school at 1:30 p.m. Before noon, an SUV had overturned on Pickens Street just west of the exit from Pea Ridge Elementary School. Two Pea Ridge School buses slid of the road.

Chili dinners are on the calendar in Northeast Benton County. The third annual Northeast Benton County (NEBCO) Volunteer Fire Department Chili cook-off set for last Saturday has been rescheduled from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 17, due to the ice and snow that fell on the area last week. There will be a dessert auction and a kid's country store.

Alex Fucci-Wilson and Ashliegh Mayes, sophomore PRHS Band members, successfully auditioned for the Region I All-Region Band. The students performed a concert program which included a selection by John Phillip Sousa and Gustav Holst. They performed a concert of band literature in the Springdale High School Performing Arts Center Jan. 27.
