Safe drop for drugs

A secure drop box for unwanted or expired drugs is provided for Pea Ridge residents by the Pea Ridge Police Department.

The red box, located on the northeast corner of the police station, is for all expired or unwanted prescription pills, vitamins and over the counter medications.

Police Lt. Eric Lyle said that the medications collected are taken to the Troop L station outside of Springdale every four months and given to the Arkansas Drug Enforcement Administration for disposal.

"Since we have started," Lyle said, "We have averaged about 50 to 70 pounds of collected medication given to the DEA for disposal.

"Our next take back and drop off is in October."

Items not accepted include needles, liquids, lotions, creams, aerosols or inhalers. Police do not need to be present for persons to drop their medications, but ask that the medication is left in the original bottle and make sure the lid is secured.

Lyle said pills should not be poured into the box loose nor placed in baggies.
