Plan to visit Pea Ridge National Military Park

Bird Walk

Pea Ridge National Military Park will conduct a guided bird walk on Saturday, Aug. 19. Park Guide/Biologist, Phillip Stephenson, will conduct the walk and help show the wide variety of birds the park has to offer. Participants will meet at 8:30 a.m. at the park visitor center for orientation and then drive to the Elkhorn Tavern to begin their walk. The program will last approximately 90 minutes and will include up to three-fourths of a mile walking. Participants are encouraged to bring comfortable footwear, water, bug repellent, sunscreen and binoculars.

Pea Ridge National Military Park preserves and commemorates the March 1862 Civil War battle that helped Union forces maintain physical and political control of the state of Missouri. Administered by the National Park Service, the 4,300-acre battlefield is located 6 miles east of Pea Ridge, just off of U.S. Highway 62. Visit us on Facebook or at: www.nps.gov/peri.

Owl Prowl slated

Pea Ridge National Military Park will host its first ever Owl Prowl at 9 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 19. Park guide Jessie Ballard will talk about the native owls of northwest Arkansas. Additionally, she will discuss the five senses of owls and how they are different from human senses. Once it is dark enough, participants will also have an opportunity to call in barred owls. The program will conclude with participants dissecting owl pellets to explore what kinds of food owls eat.

Participants will meet at the park visitor center at 8:50 p.m. and caravan to the Elkhorn Tavern (Tour Stop No. 8) to begin. This program will last approximately one hour. Participants should bring a flashlight and their best owl calls. For information, call 479-451-8122 x 1227.

Partial Solar Eclipse Program and Viewing slated

Visitors who come to the park will receive a pair of glasses to use to view the partial eclipse. The eclipse will begin at 11:43 a.m., reach its peak at 1:12 p.m. and ends at 2:40 p.m. Although we are not in the path of totality, the obscuration of the sun will be at 92 percent and still be very impressive (weather permitting). Children of all ages can come and complete a Junior Ranger Eclipse Explorer booklet and earn a Junior Ranger Solar Eclipse badge. The park has a limited number of booklets and badges available so please arrive early to obtain one.

As a safety note, DO NOT look directly at the sun during the eclipse and use only APPROVED safety viewing glasses. You can cause serious, permanent damage to your eyes viewing the eclipse either directly or incorrectly. Please call 479-451-8122 x 1227 for more information.
