Find green tomatoes at market

It's a southern thing, those fried green tomatoes.

Given new life and made popular by the movie dubbed the same in 1991, fried green tomatoes are delicacies for people in the south.

After the movie was released, the fried item became popular once again, reviving old recipes that had stood the test of time.

Carol Roper, Pea Ridge Farmers Market organizer, was raised in deep southern Arkansas -- the Pine Bluff region.

Though her southern cook grandmother did not make fried green tomatoes, Roper thinks they are delicious. She's also found a green tomato pie -- made with cinnamon and sugar -- which is perfect for a summer meal.

And green tomatoes are available at the Pea Ridge Farmers Market, which is open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Thursday and Sunday.

As the summer produce continues, the Farmers Market also will feature Vanzant apples, grapes and sweet cherries in coming weeks.

Vendors and customers can enjoy some free cold bottled water, courtesy of the market, Roper said.

The Pea Ridge Farmers Market is located at 197 Slack St. For updated information, visit the Pea Ridge Farmers Market or Heritage Gardens on Facebook.
