Keeping it in the family

"The old man just schooled the daughter and the granddaughter!"

Kent Morris, announcer for the 28th annual Pea Ridge Mule Jump, excitedly commended Joe Sams, 66, of Anderson, Mo., when he came in with a time of 26.5 seconds in the senior division of pole bending.

"That is the fastest time of the day!"

Sams' daughter, Becki Payne of Pryor, Okla., had a time of 27.8 seconds in the adult division to take first place. Her daughter, Maranda Stites of Pea Ridge ran the poles in 27.9 seconds but garnered a 5 second penalty when she knocked down a pole.

"If Maranda would keep her elbows down, she'd be fine," Morris laughed.

"Joe is daddy to Becki and granddaddy to Maranda," Morris told the crowd. "They don't come to leave with a second; they come to win. Don't know if he taught them that or they taught him."
