Students participate in oratorical contests

Makenna Higgins, junior, and Dalton Nesbitt, sophomore, at Pea Ridge High School, recently won the oratorical contest sponsored by the Pea Ridge Optimist Club. The theme was "How my best brings out the best in others."

Higgins and Nesbitt were awarded each medallion's for the honor along with the Club's Scholarship of $350 each to be used when they attend college. In addition, both students were sent to the TennArk District level where they competed against winners from other Optimist Clubs in the TennArk Optimist District in Conway at Central Baptist College. The students who participate at the District level had the chance to win a $2,500 scholarship, and then are advanced to the Optimist International Regional /World Championship in St. Louis on June 23-24 for a chance to win an additional $5,000 or up to $15,000 scholarship.

"Makenna and Dalton did a wonderful job presenting their speech on this year's theme," John Lasater, Pea Ridge club president, said. "The members of our Optimist Club have no doubt that Makenna and Dalton have bright futures ahead of them."

The Optimist Club of Pea Ridge has been participating in the Optimist Oratorical Contest for several years and has been active in the community since March 2005.
