Art students win state awards

A large contingent of local youth artists made the trek to Little Rock last week to accept their awards at the annual state art competition awards ceremony. This was the eighth straight year that Pea Ridge has had multiple winners in this statewide contest.

Sponsored by the Arkansas Department of Wildlife and Conservation, Pea Ridge took home 10 awards with students winning places in each grade kindergarten through fifth grade. No other school in the state took home more than three such honors.

Kindergartner Caitlyn Humes was a first place winner in her division with Addison Latham taking third as well. Collin Little was second in the first grade contest with Sophia LaPlant taking fourth. Avery Moore and Brady Spivey were third and fourth in the second grade competition, respectively, with Ava Clark winning third in the third grade. Halie Muller and Seth Foster were third and fourth in the fourth grade group with Seth Anderson rounding out the day with a third place finish in the fifth grade competition.

Before the awards, the students had the opportunity to tour the Arkansas Museum of History, Union Station and the Arkansas State Capitol. Students were led on a tour of the various departments of state government and even got to inspect the Arkansas state treasury, having the opportunity to hold $400,000 in cash bundles.

All the artists winning entries are featured in the 2017 Arkansas State Conservation Calendar which went on sale at the ceremony.

All 52 works of art in the calendar will be traveling around Arkansas on a state arts tour, making month long stops in Little Rock, Fort Smith, Jonesboro, and Pine Bluff and will be seen by thousands of people.
