One of the biggest black walnut crops in recent years sent families to the woods to gather walnuts by the tons the past few days and started the annual walnut hulling and buying operation in Pea Ridge off to a running start on Monday of this week. The walnut huller is located on the Webb Feed Store property north of the high school.

Fred Stewart, who with his wife, is purchasing the Pea Ridge Drug Store, assumed his new duties in managing the store on Monday. Mrs. Lemoine Wright, who with her husband have owned and operated the store the past several years, will remain to help operate the business. Stewart announced that everything will remain the same at the store expect for expanded hours, the addition of more games at the back of the store and expansion of the drug and cosmetic lines.

The proposed site for the Pea Ridge City Park is located on Arkansas Highway 265 (Hayden Road, which is better known locally as Jacket Road). The beginning of the property lies about .7 of a mile from Arkansas Highway 94 West.

Beta Alpha made a contribution of $200 to each of two ambulance services in Northeast Benton County this week. Pat Patterson, Beta Alpha member, made the presentation to Sam Spivey, Pea Ridge Ambulance Service, and Dorothy Williams, Beta Alpha president, made the presentation to Joan Bachman, VAS coordinator. Spivey said Pea Ridge Ambulance Service would use their $200 for needed equipment. VAS plans to purchase two sets of air splints, cervical collars and apply the balance to a KED, a flexible patient back board.

Work on Leetown Road should begin soon, according to County Judge Al Norwood, who said Tuesday that all the necessary rights-of-way have been acquired. The contract for placing crushed stone on the 2.9 miles affected was let Oct. 3 to Cooper Communities, Bella Vista, for $262,117. The project extends from just east of Ark. Hwy. 94 in Pea Ridge to Ark. Hwy. 72.

The president of the Pea Ridge Lions Club said that last Saturday's seventh annual International Mule Jump as an overwhelming success. President Dale Wagner said that easily more than 2,000 people attended the day-long event. Wagner said that the Lions Club hopes to net at least $7,500 from the mule jump for its projects that benefit many in the community.

Mule Jump first place winners included: Halter Under 51-inch, Tyler Shockley; Halter 51-inch & Above, Don Shockley; Pole Bending 14 & Younger, Larren O'Leary; Pole Bending 15 & Older, Beaver Blackfox; Jump Under 51-inches, Sonny, owned by Beaver Blackfox; Jump 51 inches & Above, Sonny, owned by Fran Blackfox; Trailer Loading, Boop Williams; Barrel Race 14 & Younger, Larren O'Leary; Barrel Race 15 & Older, Beaver Blackfox; Bat'n Barrel 14 & Younger, Laramy O'Leary; Bat'n Barrel 15 & Older, Boop Williams; Green Jump, Gus, owned by Don Sams; and Mule/Rider Obstacle Course, Boop Williams.

Sonny Friend and Red took the $1,000 first place prize in Saturday's 17th annual Professional Mule Jump with a jump of 65 1/2 inches. Vanessa O'Brien of Goodman, Mo., won first place in the adult category of the Hog Calling Contest.

Riders saddled up for a ride in the third annual Family Fun Day held Oct. 1 at the Pea Ridge National Military Park. The event was sponsored by Proctor and Gamble with Wal-Mart, Sam's Club and the Wal-Mart Foundation. Fun Day's purpose was to raise funds in support of Give Kids the World Village, a nonprofit resort for children with life-threatening illnesses.
