Do you every wonder 'Why?'

This must be my "Why is it?" week. It all started when I was approaching the railroad tracks on Dixieland Street. I noticed that cars ahead of me tapped their brakes just before the tracks. I realized I had done it also. Why? We all knew there would probably be a bump.

Why? Anytime I see a police car, I glance at my speedometer?

Why? Anytime we dial an 800 number, we allot extra time figuring that we'll be there for a while?

Why? Do we listen to all of the options before we choose one? Simple! Because we hope that the next one will be just the one we want.

Why? Do the magazine companies keep sending me renewable notices and offers to free copies when it's four months before expiration?

Why? After all this time do I still glance at my wrist when I wonder what time it is?

Why? I've never played an athletic sport, but I know all the terms of lay ups, free throw and bunt, but when the crossword asked for the name of people playing chess, I didn't know? It's men!

Why? Every time we enter a store or building more than once, we truck right down the same aisle and we sit in the same pew every Sunday?

Why? Do I tense up as soon as I see a school bus in my lane of traffic?

Why? When we hear the word hospice, cancer immediately comes to mind?

This week I've learned that there are different forms of hospice. My sister is involved in one, called end-of-life hospice. She walks, talks, eats and functions well and her mind is fine. But, she trips, falls, faints and sleeps too much. I'm so grateful someone can stay in close touch. She tells me that they are good about giving her time alone when possible.

Why? When we scan the obituaries every morning, we still gasp when we see a familiar name?

I'll switch to a different subject now.

Quote from Steve Wilson on retirement: "Don't cry because it's over, smile because it happened!" I like that!

Another thing I jotted down this week was on sadness. "Emotions are not forever, they will eventually soften."

Also from a circular: "If you aren't happy here, what makes you think that you will be somewhere else?"

The Chimes group did an outstanding job of playing "Amazing Grace" Sunday morning, The combined choirs are practicing for the Christmas program. They will present it at 4:30 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 13. This year it will be held at the Brightwater Church and next year will be at the Pea Ridge Church.

So much rain this week. But, we won't complain, because we know what it's like to do without.
