Legislative races spring up as filing closes

From Staff Reports

Six state legislative races in Benton and Washington counties will have Republican primaries after a bevy of last-minute candidate filings Monday.

No Democratic lawmakers from Northwest Arkansas face primary opposition, although one drew a Republican opponent for the general election.

Filing for the March 1 preferential primary and nonpartisan judicial election ended Monday, Nov. 9.

The winner of the March 1 primary faces no major-party opposition in the Nov. 8 general election.

Arkansas law requires a state House candidate live within a House District at least one year before the general election.

Rep. Sue Scott, R-Rogers, drew one Republican opponent on the last day of filing. Austin McCollum, a Walmart executive, will run against Scott in the District 95 race. The winner will face Libertarian Grant Brand.

Rep. Grant Hodges, R-Rogers, will face Libertarian Michael J. Kalagias of Garfield.
