The office of Congressman John Paul Hammerschmidt reported last week that the American Revolution Bicentennial Commission was officially designating Pea Ridge as a Bicentennial Community.

Sunday's snow was the heaviest snowfall of the winter. A foot-long ruler stuck in the snow measured eight and one-half inches. Pea Ridge weather observer Frank Price said at mid-afternoon Sunday that the snow apparently measured about seven inches at that time on level areas, although the much drifting made it difficult to figure.

Billie Jines, chairman of a committee to design and propose a monument to the old Pea Ridge College, submitted the committee's proposal for the structure, to be made of brick from both the college and the Old Gym, and to house the bell which originally hung in the college bell tower. A bronze plaque will tell pertinent dates and other information. A "time capsule" will contain donated mementos.

Rose Bray, Girl Scout Service Unit chairman for Garfield and Pea Ridge, basketball team statistician and sixth-grade room mother was presented with a PTA Honorary Life Membership award at the Feb. 19 annual PTA Founder's Day observance at Garfield School. Also honored were 10 past president: Jewell Dye, Dorothy Ross, Lucy Benbow (for her late husband), Lida Ellis, Erma Weston, Oma Gawain, Lida Schnitzer, Iva Roberts, Charlene Stockton and Steve Davisson.

An arsonist set a fire at Pea Ridge National Military Park last week that burned more than 10 percent of the park's acreage and was not brought under control for two days. The fire burned approximately 530 acres in the 4,300-acre park. Park superintendent Steve Adams said that the National Park Service is offering a $1,000 reward for information that leads to an arrest and conviction.

The 133rd anniversary of the Battle of Pea Ridge will be observed at Pea Ridge National Military Park on Saturday, March 4. Sons of Union Veterans and Sons of Confederate Veterans will make brief presentations and place a commemorative wreath at the Reunited Soldiery monument near Elkhorn Tavern.

Craig Brown has begun offering a service through Hands-On Chiropractic in Pea Ridge to provide custom arch support systems and accessories for individuals with foot problems.

At its Feb. 14 meeting, the Seligman City Council voted to advertise for bids to add 300 square-feet to the police garage located by City Hall. The addition would include a bathroom, evidence lock-up and police office.

William T. Grassle, a Rogers seventh grader who is home schooled, was the winner of the Patriot's Pen Essay contest at the Wood-Hall Post 8109 and the the District 1 winner, sponsored by Wood-Hall Post 8109. He was presented with a plaque and a monetary award at the District 1 meeting in Bella Vista on Feb. 5. The theme of his essay was "What Service to our Country Means to Me."
