Council selects top three

GARFIELD -- City Council members narrowed the field of applicants for the city's recorder/treasurer position from 12 to three. Over the past few weeks, council members have individually reviewed the incoming applications, discarded those which were ineligible (such as not living within the city limits) and then discussed their results at a special meeting Monday night.

The three candidates slated to be interviewed Thursday, Feb. 19, during a special City Council meeting are: Patricia Cranford, Stella Higginson and Teresa Vining, according to Mayor Gary Blackburn.

Initially, applications were received from: Patricia Cranford, Angelina Christensen, Amanda Grimes, Carol Grotts, Stella Higginson, Mary Anne Maresh, Andrew Poor, Kandance Robbins, Darlene Russell, Brenda Talburt, Kahrya Vaughn and Teresa Vining.

"We discussed the procedure of filling the position," the mayor said, explaining that after quite a bit of discussion, the council agreed on a format for Thursday's interviews.

Questions for the candidates are designed to "bring out the strengths" the council is looking for in the person to fill the position, strengths like honesty, integrity, work ethic, people interaction skills, service, decision making, initiative and adaptability, Blackburn said. Candidates are scheduled to meet with council members at 5:30 p.m. Thursday. The Council meeting is set for 6 p.m. Once the winning candidate is chosen, the mayor will issue the oath of office.
