There's lots to do in August

Welcome to another Wednesday edition of Library Happenings!

Is it just me or are the weeks rolling by faster? Is it because we know fall and winter are on the way and we are rushing around trying to enjoy every minute of summer? On the last page of this month's issue of Arkansas Living published by Arkansas Electric Cooperatives, Inc., is calendar of events around Arkansas for August. There are many interesting events including Gravette Day and Wagapalooza 2015 in Gentry on Aug. 8. The 39th annual Hope Watermelon Festival and the 36th annual Cave City Watermelon Festival is Aug. 6-8. All my life I have been told there are no better watermelons than the ones from Cave City! The Ozarks Roadshow Antiques and Car Show at Fairfield Bay is Aug. 8. There will be antique vendors, specialists on site to appraise items for free, a car show, and of course, food and fun. The August calendar will be posted at the library.

Library hours

1 p.m. until 8 p.m. Monday and Tuesday

10 a.m. until 6 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday

10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturdays.

While all of the above sounds like fun, maybe you just want to stay inside and read a good book. If that is the case, come by the library and find something to your liking. While going through a box of donated books last week I came across a copy of "They Popped My Hood and Found Gravy on the Dip Stick" by Todd Starnes, the host of FOX News & Commentary. It is the story of his 100-plus pound weight loss and his successful running of the New York City Marathon after open-heart surgery. As a former Arkansas governor wrote: "Todd's stories will make you laugh, touch your heart, and encourage you to take steps toward living a better life."

Monday evening, Aug. 10, between 6 and 8 p.m., Melanie Beehler will be at the library promoting healthier eating as part of the Girl Scouts Healthy Living Program. Healthy snacks will be available. Come by and learn how you and your family can make better food choices.

We have four new books available this week:

• "The Melody Lingers On" by Mary Higgins Clark, a breathtaking tale of deception, missing billions and those determined to learn the truth at any cost;

• "The Insider Threat" by Brad Taylor is a Pike Logan thriller about ISIS and how they are poised to make their most audacious strike yet;

• "The Naked Eye" by Iris and Roy Johansen, how can you catch a killer when everyone thinks he is dead?

• "The Rumor," the 15th novel by Elin Hilderbrand, the story of two best friends on Nantucket.

This month our display will be from Granny's Quilts of Love. Be sure to stop in and see their display of quilts for the Arkansas Children's Hospital. Make plans to attend their annual fundraiser dinner and auction beginning at 5:30 p.m. on Aug. 29. It's always a fun event!

See you at the library!
