Jesus is the Bread of Life

Summer is starting to wind down. It is still hot with a lot of sun, and the kids are still out of school, but only for a couple more weeks. The days are already getting shorter. Summer is marked by such great traditions as picnics and cookouts. This is a time when families and friends join together and enjoy great eats such as sandwiches, hamburgers and hotdogs. These great summertime delicacies would not be possible or least not the same without a common staple we call bread.

Bread is a staple in the diets of nearly all Americans. Bread is a staple the world over and has been for millennia. Bread is inexpensive, easy to get and keeps well. We have different types of breads that are typically eaten at different meals. Bread is made from different types of grains and is filled with fiber and vitamins that is needed for our bodies to be healthy. Bread nourishes and sustains us. It is no wonder Jesus made the declaration, "I am the bread of life." This is one of seven "I am" statements that Jesus makes to reveal the nature of his identity.

Jesus, like the physical bread we eat, sustains and nourishes us. Jesus gives us grace and mercy. Everyday he fills us with forgiveness and the great gift of salvation. He lifts us up when we are down, strengthens us when we are weak. This why bread is an important element in communion.

What is asked of us in return? Do the work of God. What is this work? Believe in the one God sent, which is Jesus, John 6:24-35. Every time you eat the staple of bread, remember the goodness and majesty of God.
