City buys building

The office of the Pea Ridge Water and Wastewater Department will move into the building formerly owned by Collier Drug on North Curtis Avenue. The City Council approved the purchase of the building for $75,000 and an ordinance financing $60,000 of the purchase price from Arvest Bank.

Ken Hayes, superintendent of the Water/Wastewater Department, said he plans to renovate the interior of the building with employees doing most of the work.

Council members unanimously approved both the resolution and the ordinance authorizing the transactions.

"It sounds like a good move," Bob Cottingham, council member, said.

Hayes explained that the lease on the current office space has been up for some time and the city has been renting that space from month to month.

Daniel McCormick, auditor, presented the audit for the Water Department.

"It sounds like it was a good audit," Sandy Button, city clerk sitting in for Mayor Jackie Crabtree, said.

Council members also approved Library officials applying for a GIF grant of $58,500 to finish a community room at the library.

"It will be a multi-purpose room," Donna Beaver, member of the Library Board of Directors, said.

Librarian Peggy Maddox and Beaver told the Council they had received two bids just to get preliminary prices on what the work would cost. They said once the project is authorized, they would advertise for bids for the actual work.

In other business, the council:

• Appointed Hayes as director and the mayor as the alternate to the Benton/Washington rural Water Authority Board;

• Authorized Street Superintendent Nathan See to advertise for bids to re-stripe Weston Street and Lee Town Road;

• Received a report from City Attorney Howard Slinkard on the Lewsader lawsuit; and

• Approved a request from Fire Chief Jamie Baggett to surplus the 1993 Deuce truck.
