Pea Ridge Graphic-Scene

The Volunteer Action Center had been established for Benton County in the Red Cross office in Bentonville. Mrs. Hugh Webb Jr. of Pea Ridge was vice chairman.

Mrs. Roy Roe of Pea Ridge won second place in the Watercolor Division of the art show of the Ozark Writers and Artist Guild held at John Brown University.

The grant issued from the Arkansas Department of Health, Education and Welfare was said to go toward opening a child development program in the VFW building on Ark. Hwy. 94. The program was set to provide 3- to 5-year-olds with a learning environment and varied experiences which would help them develop socially, intellectually, physically and emotionally.

Pea Ridge Country Times

Devonna Nobles, who barbered in Oklahoma for the previous two years, opened a barber shop in Pea Ridge to serve men, women and children. The new shop was located in the building which previously housed the offices of the Pea Ridge Medical Center and the Pea Ridge Dental Laboratory and was in the area occupied by Harp's Pharmacy and Pea Ridge Dental Clinic.

Henry Bray, Stacy Paulsen, Dennis Huston, Jimmy Jones and Shane Blackburn attended the Razorback Basketball Camp at the University of Arkansas hosted by Eddie Sutton.

Frances Patterson, oldest living charter member of the Pea Ridge Extension Homemakers Club accepted the title to the E.H. building from Mt. Vernon Lodge.

The TIMES of Northeast Benton County

The Pea Ridge Police Department joined a national movement to reduce the victimization of older citizens. The program, or triad, was a cooperative effort among the local chapter of the American Association of Retired Persons, the Sheriff's Office and police stations.

Veteran firefighter Tim Wood retired from the Pea Ridge Fire Department after 24 years of service. Wood's application in his personal file was dated July 1970 and was signed by Mayor Jack Musteen and Fire Chief Harold Hurd.

The oldest woman at the Pea Ridge Fair was Hazel Dryden, 86. The oldest men at the fair were Glenn Wallace, 89, and Lawrence Coffee, 80. Each were awarded a gift certificate from Montgomery's IGA.

The Elkhorn Tavern at Pea Ridge National Military Park was being renovated including new siding, paint, porch railings and floors.

Kelsey Young and Meagan Morgan both signed scholarship contracts with Labette College in Parsons, Kan., to attend college and play fast pitch softball. Young planned to major in criminal justice and Morgan was majoring in nursing.

More than 160 area residents attended a meeting hosted by the Arkansas Highway and Transportation Department at the First Baptist Church in Garfield to discuss and see plans for the new project that would widen U.S. Highway 62 from Avoca to Garfield. There were two proposed plans and the residents got to voice their opinions on which plan they would like to see.
