Gary Fletcher of Pea Ridge suffered a severely injured back in an accident late Sunday morning. Police officer Lloyd Pifer said Fletcher reported a truck was crowding him off the road and he edged nearer to the ditch to avoid striking the truck and that his right wheels suddenly slid off of the road causing the steering wheel to jerk rapidly around striking Fletcher. The pickup truck which caused the accident did not stop.

Mr. and Mrs. Floyd Creekmore were elected as sweetheart and beau for Beta Alpha.

A plaque of appreciation was presented to Floyd Walker, who was rounding out a five-year term on the Pea Ridge School Board. He did not seek re-election. Tony Fletcher Jr. and Franklin Miller were vying for his seat.

Pea Ridge School Board members considered a proposal by superintendent Roy Roe to enlarge and expediate the services at the school cafeteria. Board members also agreed to let bids for the sewer line for the new gymnasium. Roe said that if construction on the gym continues as planned, the Class of 1974 will graduate in the new gym. Board members present were L.C. Barnett Jr., Keith Escue, Jack Lasater and Floyd Walker. Board member Royle Carnes was absent.

A new sanctuary at the Pea Ridge United Methodist Church was finished and a date set for the consecration for the following Sunday. The old church, built in 1907, was razed to make way for the new one. Persons serving on the building committee were Wayne Elington, Jack Lasater, Charles Lee, Carl Baggett, James Mayfield, Mildred Walker, Olivia Miser, Billy Hall, Haryle Greene, Orville Crabtree and Mary Jane Jarecki. The earliest pastor listed for the church was William T. Anderson, 1843; the earliest dates found for baptismal records were 1869 for Martha J. McCool and Mary A. Mitchell, with John M. More than 35 acres burned at the Pea Ridge National Military Park. The fire was believed to be set deliberately somewhere near Old Lee Town Road.

Both junior Blackhawk basketball teams beat St. Paul in their first round of their district tournaments but the boys lost to Farmington and the girls lost to Gentry in the second round. The junior boys basketball team won the sportsmanship award for the league.

The youth of the Pea Ridge Church of the Nazarene entered five competitions at the Nazarene Zonal Teen Talent Competition. Chryll Taylor and Stacee Skaggs took first for their duet, Skaggs also took first for her flute solo, Robin Parker's vocal solo took second, the choir took first, and a skit put on by the choir members took second.

The Pentecostal youth competed in a talent competition in Stilwell, Okla. The youth who participated included Charles Fletcher, Melissa Brown, Tammy Fletcher, Bonnie Warner and Kevin Fletcher.

The Rev. Rick Booyer became the pastor of Twelve Corners Baptist Church. Booyer lived in Jane, Mo. with his wife, Carisa and two daughters Cara and Rachael. He said hoped to move into the Pea Ridge or Garfield area soon.

Brooke Anderson was named to the All-District Girl's Team while Wes Mabry and Mike Burton were named to the All-District Boy's team.

Jennifer Wagner, daughter of Dale and Patti Wagner of Pea Ridge and a junior at Pea Ridge High School, auditioned and made one of the two all-region bands and attended the Region's "Super Clinic" held in Springdale.

Navy Petty Officer 1st Class Daniel K. Hurst, son of Carlton and Phoebe Hurst of Garfield, was one of the first Navy medical personnel to deploy to Croatia in support of the United Nations peacekeeping force that was positioned there.

Kasey Smith, daughter of Ken and Jani Smith and granddaughter of Jerry and Sharron Hay, all of Pea Ridge, was named Mardi Gras Queen at the Ridge Rockers Mardi Gras dance. The king and queen were selected by a "best mask" competition.

The Blackhawks beat Johnson County Westside 68-40 to advance into the semifinals of the district tournament but lost to Cedarville 44-41. The Blackhawks advanced to the regional tournament because they made it to the semi-finals.
