Cardboard recycling change announced

Recycle trailers are set up behind the Fire Department station for the conveniece of city resicents. A change recently is in the type of cardboard accepted.

A sign that says "no pop or beer cartons" is now on the cardboard trailer.

The trailers are behind the Fire Station on the southwest corner of Slack Street and South Curtis Avenue.

"There has always been a contaminate in cardboard," according to Wendy Cravens with Benton County Solid Waste District.

Chipboard (like cereal or cracker boxes) is smooth paperboard that is much lower quality than cardboard. We can still recycle chipboard but it now has to be separated from the cardboard.

"We've changed our internal processing and are testing divided collection in the trailers," Cravens said.

Cardboard is to be flattened and emptied of any plastic or packing material.
