Driver loses control, injured near Garfield

From Staff Reports

GARFIELD -- A Rogers man was injured in a one-vehicle accident shortly after 4 p.m. Wednesday, according to an Arkansas State Police report.

The driver, Christopher Smiley, 32, of Rogers, was driving west on U.S. Highway 62, approaching Garfield. He was negotiating a downhill curve during a period of light rain. The operator lost control of the vehicle and slid down a steep hill, striking several small saplings and a barbed wire fence near the bottom of the hill. His vehicle came to an abrupt stop when it struck a large tree with the front end, deploying air bags.

A witness and good Samaritan, according to State Trooper George Enke, stopped to assist. He reported that the driver was un-restrained during the collision.

Smiley was initially taken to Northwest Medical Center in Bentonville, and later transported to Mercy Hospital in Springfield, Mo., due to the extent of his injuries.
