A trio of Pea Ridge Elementary art students claimed first place awards in the state wide 2014 Wildlife of Arkansas Student Art Contest. There will be an exhibition and awards program May 2 to honor them.

They will be joined for four other Pea Ridge students who claimed second and third places in the competition sponsored by the Arkansas Department of Wildlife and Conservation. All first place winners will receive a trophy, certificate and $100 bill. Second place finishers will take home a certificate and a $50 bill with third place winners taking home $25 and a certificate.

Kindergartener Zaylee Warden took top honors in her division with a crayon and tempera composition of a wild bunny, while Jasmine Navarre claimed the top spot among first graders in the state with her crayon and watercolor painting of a nest of baby birds. Rounding out the first place winners was third-grader Chloe Jennings' tempera painting of a young fawn.

First-grader Shylo Whitmore won second place in her division with a tempera painting of a raccoon. Second-grader Donovan Oxford won second in his grade with a tempera painting a deer in the woods. First-grader Emory Bowlin was a third place finisher with her tempera painting of a possum with second-grader Luke Baker rounding out the award winners with a third place tempera painting of a squirrel.

The students will travel with their teacher, John McGee, on May 2 to take a tour of the Arkansas State Capitol and seeing other sites of interest in downtown Little Rock before going to the Witt Stephens Nature Center where the awards ceremony will take place. The Stephens Center is located on Clinton Avenue on the banks of the Arkansas River in downtown Little Rock.

The students' art will be on display at the Stephens Center from May 2-29 when it will be moved to be exhibited at the Crowley's Ridge Nature Center in Jonesboro until June 26. The exhibition will then be moved to be placed on display at the Janet Huckabee Nature Center in Fort Smith until July 25, with the final exhibition scheduled to take place at the Mike Huckabee Nature Center in Pine Bluff until Aug. 22.

In addition, the students art will be included in the 2015 Arkansas Wildlife Conservation Calendar, calendars that will be available at the May 2 awards showing.
