40 Years Ago Wednesday, Sept. 5, 1973 Pea Ridge Graphic-Scene

W.M. Smith and wife reported that they grew a record-breaking sunfl ower.

One of the sunfl owers measured 16 inches in diameter across the seed face.

The Pea Ridge grocery store held its annual sale which included 59 cents for a dozen eggs, cake mixes for 29 cents, Little Debbie snacks for 25 cents and 10 pounds of potatoes for 89 cents.

Two Blackhawk football players were named Outstanding Blackhawks of the week after beating Gentry 12-0. Jordan Miser was named lineman of the week with 10 unassisted tackles and fi ve assisted ones. Jackie Ford was selected as linebacker of the week because he had an interception and a fumble recovery which resulted in a touchdown.

A Pea Ridge horse earned $31,000 at All American Futurity at Ruidoso Downs, N.M. He was Calcutta Deck, owned and trained by Bill Smith of Pea Ridge. He was ridden by Larry Wilson and fi nished eighth overall in the Labor Day event.

During the Blackhawk home football game against Ft. Smith Christian, which ended with a loss for Pea Ridge, the high school was broken into and an estimated $120 was stolen out of lockers.

Kelly Hale, of Pea Ridge, and teammates, Steven Schinkel and Dawn Rystrom, both of Bentonville, won first place at the 4-H Energy Bowl at the State ORama convention.

David Broadbooks attended church at the Garfield First Baptist Church for the first time since getting pinned beneath a heavy grader. His injuries included a crushed leg, a severed arm and a severe wound on his torso.

Navy Seaman Recruit Scott E. Mueller, son of Jody A. White, Garfi eld, completed his training at the Naval Training Center in Great Lakes, Ill.

The Pea Ridge public school’s students of the week, referred to as VIPs, were Brian Leslie, Matthew Shaner, Brandy Renfro, David Barnum, Don Robertson, Lelia Hennagan, James Simpson, Eddie Mckenzie, Cindy Crawford, Jamie Poindexter, ThomasArnett, John Renfro, Michael Hammers and Travis Brown.

20 Years Ago Thursday, Sept. 9, 1993 The TIMES of Northeast Benton County

The Pea Ridge United Fund announced that their board members included Sandy Easley, Mike Villines and Carmen Snyder. The symbol for the 1993 United Fund campaign was created by Donny Gri◊n, fourthgrade student in Garfi eld.

The 1993 Blackhawk football team won the fi rst game of the season against Gentry, 14-3. The player of the week was Robbie Johnson, who rushed for 106 and led the team with 10 tackles.

The Benton County 4-Hattended the state 4-H O-Rama. The winners at the event were Ashley Mc-Cool, Pea Ridge, who won the home furnishing event while Clay Wagner, also of Pea Ridge, won for reporting.

10 Years Ago Wednesday, Sept. 3, 2003 The TIMES of Northeast Benton County

The 10th annual Pea Ridge Charity Golf Classic had 76 participants in the event. The estimated total raised was more than $7,000 which was put toward helping the Pea Ridge community. The longest drive winners were Jerry Hay, Je◊Spivey, Jason Dixon and Ron Koosman.The first place team included Ron Koosman, Tim Starner,Randy Prophet and Perry Mason.

The Pea Ridge marching band o◊cers were Lisa Collins, Kendra London, Lauren Littrel, Shea Spear, Shawn Guthrie, Brad Evans and Jesse Graham.

The Pea Ridge Blackhawk football team opened their season with a 37-28 win over Berryville. Ryan Barnett, junior at Pea Ridge High School, rushed for a total of 126 yards.

The Pea Ridge Blackhawks celebrate 40 years of football as well as 40 years of football at the Pea Bowl.

The 1963 football team was honored at the half-time of the first home game of the 2003 season. The Blackhawk record for the 1963 season was 1-8.
