Freedom Fest fireworks set

From its meager beginnings of a church picnic and fireworks show, Freedom Fest has grown into a full-scale festival for thousands of people. Slated for 6 p.m. Sunday, June 30, the event is hosted by Assembly of God Church with the help of other churches and community members, said Edwin Brewer, pastor of First Assembly of God Church.

Brewer said about 500 people attended the event the first year and more than 2,000 are anticipated this year. Dinner is served at 6 p.m. and fireworks begin at dark. The fireworks are donated by Brewer, owner of USA Fireworks.

“This is a joint effort. Not only do members of our church work to put this on, but many other churches and community members are involved,” Brewer said.

The event is held on the Assembly of God grounds on Weston Street.

Other churches hosting the event include New Life Fellowship, The Ridge Church, Mt. Vernon Presbyterian Church, River of Faith, Pea Ridge Nazarene and Westside Baptist Church. There will be a car show, a motorcycle show, live music, inflatables, cotton candy, snow cones, watermelon and a dunk booth. Dinner will include chicken wraps, chicken sandwiches and hot dogs.
