Wearing gloves to protect from bites and scratches, police entered a home on Klauss Lane to pick up dozens of cats, which were reportedly ill.

Initial reports received by police were that there were more than 30 cats and four dogs in a home on Klauss Lane. Police received a call from a physician’s office with concerns about public health and safety. The resident had been to the doctor concerned that she was ill because of her animals.

“We checked with the Benton County Health Department and the state Veterinary Office,” Police Chief Tim Ledbetter said, before making any decisions. He said city ordinance limits the number of animals at a residence to a total of four.

On the afternoon of Wednesday, July 17, police arrived at the home and found 18 cats in the house and more outside. Police, with the assistance of the Benton County Sheriff’s Office animal control division, picked up the cats and two dogs. They were transported to Oak View Animal Hospital at the request of the owner of the animals.

The resident agreed to capture and remove the outside cats.

Several of the cats picked up were seriously ill and had to be euthanized.
