Street work begins soon

Both Smith and Tinnin streets will be widened this spring, according to Nathan See, Street Department superintendent. See said work will begin soon after the city clean-up.

Tinnin Street will be widened by about two feet on the north side, See said, explaining that the north side was selected because of the placement of utility lines.

Smith Street will be widened by two feet on both sides.

“We will overlay those and on South Davis Street,” See said, adding that other streets may be overlaid depending on the cost of asphalt once bids come in.

He said preparatory work will begin the week after the clean-up and overlay work will be in July or August.

“The grocery store is one of the main sources of revenue and trucks enter off Smith Street,” See said. Drainage will be restructured along the roadway.

“We will be looking at the smaller roads for the next couple of years and trying to get them up to par. We have a five-year plan of doing other streets that are dedicated, but are gravel.”
