Six girls place at state

— Six Pea Ridge athletes came home with awards from the Class AAAA State Girls Track and Field Championships held last week in Nashville.

The Lady ’Hawks came away with seven ribbons earned in the four events the previously qualified for at the meet. The top individual performer in the meet for the locals was freshman Emma Pitts who earned a seventh in the 200 meter dash with a seasons’ best 28.1 clocking. The ’Hawks also scored an eighth in both the 1,600 meter run and the 3,200 meter run. Freshman Anna Morgan grabbed her placing with a 6:09 effort in the 1,600 while junior Natalie Flippo was posting a 13:31 time in the 3,200.

The 4x800 relay team of Flippo, Morgan, Kaylee Nivens, andSavannah Cypert took a seventh in the meet with an exciting finish. With Morgan anchoring the girls team, it came down to a three person sprint to the finish for seventh. Morgan just nudged ahead enough for the girls to take seventh in 11:27.9, just a tenth of a second ahead of Gravette and two/tenths ahead of Mariana.

The extra point that Pea Ridge earned ahead of Gravette allowed them to finish one point ahead of the Lady Lions in the final team standings. The ’Hawks scored 6 points to Gravettes’ 5.

Nashville easily won the girls’ title with 124 points followed by DeQueen with 97, Heber Springs 59, Lake Village 55, Ashdown 41, Berryville 32, Waldron 27, Marianna 26, Star City 20, Mena 17, Clarksville 16, Gosnell 16, Booneville 16, Prairie Grove 15, Maumelle 13, Dover 13, Valley VIew 10, Batesville Southside 10,Shiloh 8, Malvern 7, Warren 6, Pea Ridge 6, Newport 5, Gravette 5, Osceola 3, Dollarway 3, Stuttgart 3, Hamburg 2, Highlands 2, Ozark 1 and Lonoke 1.

Scoring in four events was themost done by a Blackhawk track team in a state meet in many years.
