Every year, George Mason University and its partners, the National Geographic Society and the Smithsonian National Zoological Park, choose 250 students in the United Statesto represent their state and school as National Youth Delegates.

The week-long summit is held on the university’s campus. Participants have inside access to the Washington Metropolitan region, with events planned at the Smithsonian National Zoo, National Geographic and the U.S. Capitol, according to the program’s website, http://wyse.gmu.edu.

The delegates take part in decision-making simulations that challenge them to solve problems and explore the creative, practical and ethical tensions inherent in the environmental arena, the website states.

The students also hear speakers who are wellknown leaders in the field.

These presenters range from prominent researchers to directors of prestigious institutions to recent college graduates already successful in the field.

Students who successfully complete the conference receive one college credit.
