40 Years Ago Thursday, Dec. 21, 1972 Pea Ridge Graphic-Scene

Meeting in monthly session at City Hall, the Pea Ridge City Council voted to authorize the city’s engineer, L. Carl Yates of Fayetteville, to file application with the Federal Environmental Protection Agency seeking a grant to assist in a major sewer improvement/ expansion program for the city of Pea Ridge.

Steve Lucas was appointed to the position of cashier of the Bank of Pea Ridge.

The Pea Ridge Church of Christ announced that it had purchased land on which to erect sometime in the future a new church building. The land was a four-acre tract of highway frontage on Arkansas Hwy.

The Brightwater EH Club held its Christmas party at the Ralph Randolph home with 13 members present and three men present.

Discussion on the possibility of developing a park at the location of the Avoca Community building and the authorization of a town marshal occupied most of the time of the Avoca Town Council meeting.

Sewers, city court, fire funds and city personnel discussions kept the Pea Ridge city council in session for some five and a half hours, with the personnel matters taking almost four hours and all of that in executive (closed) session.

Twelve Corners Church was the latest victim in the rash of Pea Ridge Country church break-ins combining vandalism and burglary. Burglars tore out a screen at the back of the church and stole the complete public address system, with mike mixer, two cassette player recorders, one record player, coffee machineand the church’s American flag.

Fire destroyed several large round bales of hay on the property of Larry David, two miles east of Pea Ridge. Responding for Pea Ridge VFD with three vehicles were Tim Wood, Rick Arnold, Darrell Bone, Jay Hale, Rick Whitaker, David Musteen and Ray Easley.

Harpist Angela Kwan Lu performed at the Bank of Pea Ridge’s holiday open house.

Pea Ridge School passed its final inspection for accreditation by the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools withflying colors. Accreditation by the association was the highest possible for high schools in a 13-state region.

The Pea Ridge City Council voted to accept a bid for a hydro-pillar water tower. The bid from Des Moines Co. of Newell, Ga., was $589,787.

Wal-Mart made a $5,000 contribution to Pea Ridge Schools for computers to be used for the accelerated math program. The computers would be used in the second, third and fourth grade classrooms.

Pea Ridge fullback Joey Wiltgen ran for a schoolrecord 2,239 yards and 26touchdowns for the Blackhawks during the 2002 season. He was named Benton County Sunday football Player of the Year.

A group of carolers serenaded Pea Ridge residents. The carolers were families and friends of New Life Fellowship on Weston Street. The group enjoyed a hayride while they caroled, then ate homemade pies and sipped hot chocolate, wassail and coffee afterwards.

Brenda Henson, vicepresident of Arvest Bank, Pea Ridge, presented a $3,000 Walton Foundation check to Linda Meier, principal of Garfield Elementary. Proceeds went to help with special needs of the school.
