Enterprise Day observed with media contest

— The Pea Ridge High School chapter of Future Business Leaders of America will observe American Enterprise Day on Saturday, Nov. 15.

In an effort to promote American Enterprise Day, the FBLA, with the help of Arvest Bank, will host a Digital Media Contest at the high school. Students in grades 9-12 are encouraged to prepare a 3- to 5-minute digital media presentation on “What American Free Enterprise Means to Me.” The presentations may be in the form of an electronic slide-show or ina video format. All entries are due no later than Nov.

  1. They must be turned in to Mrs. Suzi Cotton in room 203 no later than 3:20 p.m.

In 1980, President Jimmy Carter made a Presidential Proclamation directing that American Enterprise Day be observed. On this day, U.S. residents recognize free enterprise and how it has contributed to the economy.

Free enterprise means that a business is not restricted by government subsidies or regulations.

Instead, the business operates under the laws ofsupply and demand. If a particular product or service is in great demand but supply is low, then it becomes more valuable to the consumer. As a result the price goes up. When supply is high and demand is low, then the price falls.

Healthy competition between businesses is a good thing for consumers.

It helps to keep prices in line. Business owners also know that in order to keep customers coming back, they need to offer their products or services at a fair price. Good customer service policies and quality products are also amust; otherwise, buyers will choose to do business with another company.

Thanks to the free enterprise system, they can make that choice, Cotton said.

A $50 gift card, provided by Arvest Bank of Pea Ridge, will be awarded to the winner on Nov.15. The contest entries will be aired on the TV outside room 203 during the week of Nov.14-18. Contact Suzi Cotton, FBLA Adviser at [email protected], for more information.
