Veterans honor deceased comrades by placing flags

— In remembrance of deceased veterans who served their country, several members of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 8109 placed flags on their graves Saturday morning of Memorial Day weekend. Memorial Day is a federal holiday observed on the last Monday of May to remember men and women who died while serving in the United States armed forces.

Flags in town were flown at half-mast until noon and then lowered by members of the Pea Ridge Volunteer Fire Department.

Veterans who honored their deceased comrades by setting the flags included:

◊Ron Simons of Pea Ridge, U.S. Army, served in South Korea;

◊Jerry Burton, U.S. Navy, served in Vietnam;

◊Bobby Prophet, U.S. Army, served in Germany;

◊Jerry Quarles, U.S. Air Force, served in Vietnam; and

◊Darrell Simons, Lee’s Summit, Mo., U.S. Army, served in Germany.

Members of the Pea Ridge VFW Post 8109 places flags on the graves of veterans in four local cemeteries: Pea Ridge Cemetery, 151 flags; Buttram’s Chapel Cemetery, 52 flags; Twelve-Corners Cemetery, 12 flags; and Roller Cemetery, Gateway, 30 flags.
