Blackhawks take it on the chin

— On the heels of very nearly upsetting one of the top-ranked teams in the state, the Blackhawks hit a dry spell offensively as they suffered a double loss last week in district basketball action. Both games were on the road.

On Jan. 25, the ’Hawks lost a roller coaster affair to Gentry, falling 50-48 in the final seconds.

Three days later the ’Hawks came up short in a bid to come from far behind as they were edged out by Prairie Grove 61-47.

The losses dropped Pea Ridge (5-3) into a tie for second place with Prairie Grove (5-3) with fourth place Shiloh (5-4) just a half-game back. With Farmington now firmly ahead in the conference race with no losses on their 9-0 record, the battle for second place looms large. The top two finishing teams in the conference standings receive a bye into the district semi-finals which also guarantees the qualifying teams a slot in the regional tournament.

The ’Hawks will be hosting the 4A-1 District tournament this year with the final four district qualifiers heading into regional play. The regional consists of the top four teams from the 4A-1 and the 4A-4 districts to battle for the four state tournament berths that are awarded to each regional.
