One-hundred persons attended the Annual Installation Dinner of the Pea Ridge Chamber of Commerce. Senator Jim Caldwell of Rogers, the lone Republican in the Arkansas Senate, was the speaker.

Members of the 4-H poultry judging team from Benton County ranked fourth nationally in overall judging at Chicago on Nov. 27, according to Merle Gross, assistant County Extension agent, who accompanied the group. Members of the team were: Viola Miser of the Pea Ridge 4-H Club; Cindi Garrett of the Center Corner 4-H;

Candy Burr of the Pleasant Hill 4-H; and Daniel Pope of Liberty Bell 4-H.

Pea Ridge City Marshal Loyd Pifer said David Scism resigned from the Police Department and that he had appointed Edward McBryde to the position. Marshal Pifer said that McBryde was a former policeman in Texas City, Texas, and in Springdale and city marshal for Decatur.

John Brown University’s Cathedral Choir presented Britten’s Ceremony of Carols and other selections during the Christmas concert at the Pea Ridge Baptist Church.

The Navy Commendation Medal was presented to Benjamin Franklin Withers, III, for his research and related work in aerospace medicine. The commendation for “meritorious achievement” was made to Commander Withers, son of Mr. and Mrs. Ben Withers, of Garfield.

The Bank of Pea Ridge gave the Pea Ridge School District $10,000 to help achieve accreditation, to enhance teaching skills regarding learning-disabled students and to promote academic achievement by students. About $5,000 of the money was to be used for teacher in service training involving learningdisabled children. Another $4,000 of the gift would be used to help the district meet what is required tobecome accredited by the North Central Association, and the remaining $1,000 would be used by the Renaissance project, which provides incentives to students for academic achievement.

The Volunteer Ambulance Service responded to 15 emergency calls in Northeast Benton County during November. The 1991 total to date was 177 runs, which exceeded the 1990 total by 13 responses.

A design by Codi Hickman, a sixth-grade student at Pea Ridge middle School, was chosen as Northwest Arkansas Community College’s annual Christmas card. Her card was to be sent to over 600 people in Arkansas and other states.

The city of Garfield passed a 1-cent sales tax levy in a special election which would add $18,000 in revenue over the next year. More than $8,000 of that was budgeted towards the repair of a broken water line on Tall Oaks Road.

Santa Claus was scheduled to visit Pea Ridge and parents were encouraged to bring their children and their cameras. This event was sponsored by the Pea Ridge City Water Department and was held at the emergency services building.
