— It’s that time of year - householders empty out closets and garages to find items they haven’t seen in years or no longer need.

Garage sale signs can be seen all around the city and residents are spending Fridays and Saturdays in their driveways.

The City of Pea Ridge does not have any ordinance governing the operation of garage sales.

But if pricing, setting up and working a good old-fashioned garage sale is not appealing, Benton County offers several options for clearing out the old and making room for the new.

◊Derry Camp’s Auction is located a quarter mile east of Pea Ridge on Arkansas Highway 72.

The Camps hold a public auction the first Thursday of the month. They do not accept clothing and furniture must be salable and in good condition. Items to be auctioned may be dropped off at the auction location the week of the sale. The Camps charge 20 percent commission on sales.

◊ Callaway Auction, on the north side of Springdale, will accept almost anything. Auctions are held every Tuesday at 4:30 p.m. Callaways will auction items from pieces of furniture to tractors and other farm equipment to vehicles, and will accept items at their location in Springdale.

Callaways also charges 20-25 percent commission, depending on the item, and will also buy items for resale.

◊Benton County offers a wide variety of thrift stores and shelters.

Thrift stores accept donations of clothing, household items, jewelry, appliances and furniture and offer a easy way to get rid of things that are no longer needed. Donation centers are located at the stores and all donations are tax-deductible, with a receipt. GoodWill, The Salvation Army and Helping Hands also offer a pick-up service for large items.

◊To sell items personally, options include placing an ad in the local newspapers or the evergrowing popular Web site www.craigslist.com.

For sale, want to buy or want to give awayclassified ads are free in the daily newspapers, including the Rogers Morning News, Benton County Daily Record, Springdale Morning News and Northwest Arkansas Times. They can be run one at a time for as long as it takes to sell, even including vehicles priced below $20,000.

Sellers are allowed five single-item ads per month or five vehicle ads per year in the daily paper.

It takes two days for an ad to appear in the daily paper.

To run an ad once in The TIMES, the price is $3.76 for four lines. The deadline is Thursday at 3 p.m. for the following Wednesday’s edition.

It’s easy and effective to sell items on www.

craigslist.com. Sellers must first set up an account, but then will be walked through easy steps of deciding under what category to list the item, wording the ad and even putting up pictures. Craigslist also takes precautions against scammers, such as verifying the account by phone call, and allows sellers to be contacted by phone, e-mail or both.
