Travis seeks to tighten defensive secondary

— For Pea Ridge coach Tony Travis, Monday’s scrimmage against Fayetteville’s junior varsity team allowed him to see what areas need to be corrected before the Black

hawks open the season.

In particular, Travis

said his secondary needs

to avoid giving up so

many short, quick passes

- though senior corner

back Michael Maddox

intercepted a Fayetteville’s

Austin Allen pass toward

the end of the scrimmage.

“Secondary coverage, we’ve got to tighten some things up,” Travis said.

“We allowed a lot of underneath stuff, which is better than giving up the deep ball.”

Pea Ridge experienced a scary moment at the end of the scrimmage whenoffensive lineman Daniel Baker collapsed while players from both teams were exchanging handshakes at mid-field.

The senior remained on his back for several minutes while getting medical treatment.

He was finally able to walk off the field on his own.

“(He) didn’t have any trouble during the game, but afterwards he was having some chest pain,” Travis said. “And talking with him coming off thefield, I think he’s OK.

“It seemed like it was more (pectoral) muscle stuff than anything, but it was a scary moment there for a while. But doctors have all checked him out, and I think he’s going to be fine.”
