At its monthly meeting Thursday night, the Pea Ridge City Council witnessed the opening of sealed bids from three firms for a proposed new firetruck for the city. On hand to deliver the bids were seven men, representing three companies submitting bids on the 750-gallon pumper truck to be used a Pea Ridge's second truck. The bids were opened by Fire Chief Harold D. Hurd.

Pea Ridge area teenagers, as well as adults, are urged this week to take part in a project through which a teenager in neihboring Oklahoma might live. Mrs. Clarence Groggan of Van Dorn Street reports that the young man, Michael Mattison of Heavener, Okla., is in desparate need of a kidney machine. Persons interested in helping are asked to collect Betty Crocker coupons by May 1.

The Pea Ridge Jr Black Hawks competed in the District Tournament in Elkins last week and started out right by defeating Greenland 36-30. Lester Hall led the Black Hawks with 12 points.

Wednesday, Feb. 18, 1981

The purchase of two 1,000-gallon tanks for the storage and dispensing of regular and unleaded gas for the city's vehicles was approved by the Pea Ridge City Council Thursday. On motion by Mayor Lester Hall, seconded by council member Jack Patterson, the council unanimously approved Charles Hardy, superintendent, to purchase the two tanks.

What started as a rain turned into snow by Tuesday afternoon and night in Pea Ridge country Feb. 10. By Wednesday morning, ice covered many of the roads and there were numerous reports of "fender benders," cars needing to be started by jumping batteris, some shoulder ditch accidents, from the icy surfaces and some accidents a bit more serious. No deths were reported in this area from the severe cold, with temperatures well below zero Tuesday and Wednesday.

At its meeting Wednesday, the Pea Ridge Planning Comission elected John Lasater as chairman, Jay Hale as vice chairman and Penny Wimmer secretary for the coming year.

The chairman of the McDonald County Commission said motorists should be driving across Sugar Creek on a new Jacket Bridge by the end of this year. The existing Jacket Bridge, 70 years old, is deteriorating.

Twice as many permits for single family dwellings were issued in Pea Ridge during 1990 as in the year before, city building inspector Floyd Blackwell said. Blackwell said permits were issued for 10 new single-family residences within the city limits in 1990. Construction value of those homes was $385,200.

The Pea Ridge City Council discussed the possibility of purchasing land near the intersection of Arkansas Highways 94 South and 72 West next to Spee-D-Mart. There is approximately 2.9 acres of land with highway frontage on both state highways.

Garfield voters have a second chance to pass a one-cent sales and use tax in May. The City Council passed an ordinance levying the tax at its meeting Tuesday, Feb. 6.

The Pea Ridge Planning Commission approved the preliminary plat for a small subdivision at its meeting Tuesday, Feb. 6. Plans for a 2.2-acre subdivision with six lots, being developed by Gene See on the corner of Van Dorn Street and McCulloch Street received preliminary approval with minor conditions.

The Pea Ridge City Council will hear a management report on the Water/Sewer Department at its regular meeting Tuesday, Feb. 20, in City Hall. Robert Button, Water/Sewer Department supervisor, will present his management report and CPA LeRoy Duell will discuss the department's audit.

Several items on this month's School Board agenda relate to the construction of a track and elementary physical education building at its meeting Tuesday, Feb. 20.

Pea Ridge school students have missed 11 days of school due to snow. Now, school officials have to decide where to add those days back into the calendar. The state mandates 178 days of "student contact" days.

Snow blew against the windshield with wipers working feverishly to clear the glass to prevent obscuring the view as Nathan See drove the one-ton truck up and down and up and down city streets blading the snow from the pavement.

Pea Ridge firefighters Brandon Jones and Justin Collins were among the firefighters from three departments who responded to a structure fire at 17545 Gann Ridge Road about 8:41 a.m. Friday, Feb. 11. The structure was used for storage.

Blackhawk sophomore Austin Easterling practices pitching to Austin Wichert as the Blackhawk baseball boys prepare for the upcoming season which begins with the first game March 7, according to coach John E. King.
