A 1967 graduate of Pea Ridge High School, Warrant Officer I Johnny L. Weston, has been wounded in Vietnam. His wife, the former Lynn Shrader of Pea Ridge (a senior at PRHS), was notified last week that her husband had been wounded by shrapnel in both knees while he was on base in Vietnam.

The Pea Ridge High School Band, which was started as a project of the local Chamber of Commerce two years ago, was the subject of some discussion at Thursday night's Chamber meeting. The band was made possible through a fundraising project in 1968.

Anticipating that more questions about the Pea Ridge sewer and water rates will be forthcoming at the meeting of the City Council Thursday, the council, at a special meeting Sept. 3, agreed that fuller explanation of the rates and the background of the situation which has led to the adoption of the schedule should be communicated to the citizens of the city.

Funding for the sewer project comes from the state, federal government and local residents. In a letter dated June 27, 1980, from Mayor Lester Hall, Pea Ridge, to B.J. McCoy, director, Department of Local Services, State of Arkansas, regarding the sanitary sewerage collection and treatment facilities, the funding was outlined.

A tornado, which roared like a train, swung down from the stormy sky about 6:20 p.m. Monday and did heavy damage to the Gann Ridge Lumber company at the intersection of Gann Ridge Road and U.S. Highway 62 and destroyed some trees in the Ray Hurd yard east of the highway.

Pea Ridge Elementary School and Pea Ridge High School are bulging with students and there's money in the bank. It's been a long time since the latter has been the case, said superintendent Marvin Higginbottom, who said "We had about a $100,000 surplus at the beginning of school -- a carryover from last year." As of last Friday, there were 757 students enrolled in the district.

The Garfield City Council on Tuesday was to receive a deed for its first City Hall/Community Building. The deed was to be presented by leaders of the Garfield Baptist Church giving title to the church's first building. The building, a stone structure, was erected in 1906.

Weeks of 95 to 100 degree temperatures and humid weather and lack of general rainfall are creating various problems for the farmers of the area. Lonnie Faddis of the Agricultural Stabilization Conservation office in Bentonville said there was a possibility of seeking a disaster declaration for the county.

At a School Board meeting one year ago, superintendent of schools Roy Norvell estimated a balance of at least $300,000 at the end of this school year. At its meeting Monday, the Board approved a budget for 2000-2001 which began with a carry over from 1999-2000 of $302,664. Making this feat of prediction even more interesting, the school district built a new $4.3 million high school last year.

During its regular monthly meeting Tuesday, the Garfield City Council approved its first waiver of the recently passed city ordinance concerning subdivisions and passed a resolution assessing a 5-mil tax against real and personal property within the city limits.

The signs on the highway signaling the two communities' city limits say something like "Avoca, population 269" and "Garfield population 308," but that didn't seem to matter to Avoca when it mapped out its water service area that infringed upon, indeed came into, the city limits of its neighbor to the east.

The bus was running late and a gray-haired man in a white van stopped in front of a driveway at a residence on Gann Ridge Road and offered a 12-year-old girl a ride. She declined. He then offered a ride to children at the next bus stop. They, too, declined. An observant adult noted the exchange and called 911.

Athletic passes will soon be available to home Pea Ridge ball games. School Board members heard a proposal from Athletic Director Larry Walker at the regular meeting Monday.

Trying to remove the vulgar words painted on the side of the historic church in the rain Monday, Fayrene Jones lamented over the damage to her church. When the few remaining members of the Corinth Church came to the service Sunday morning three weeks ago, they made a startling discovery. The building had been vandalized, marked with obscene words.

Walking down Carr Street Monday morning, a man was bitten by a dog which ran from a nearby yard. He was treated by emergency personnel from the Pea Ridge Fire-EMS Department and police impounded the dog.
