Last Wednesday's high temperature coupled with an extremely high humidity is blamed for the sudden death of 1,855 turkeys here that would have gone to market that night. Owned by Webb's Feed and Seed, the turkeys were being pastured on the Carroll Jones farm northwest of Pea Ridge. Fred McKinney, president of Webb's, said that it had been realized that there was a scarcity of shade at the location, but that the turkeys were to be ready for market around the first of July, normally the beginning of the extreme hot weather in the area.

Tim Wood, a Pea Ridge native who recently returned here to make his home following his discharge from the U.S. Army, became a partner in the A & D Grocery here last week when he purchased the Fred Abbott share of the business. The store, located in the downtown business section, has been owned and operated as a partnership the past three and a half years by Fred Abbott and A.A. Douglas. The son of Mr. and Mrs. Owen Wood, Tim was discharged from the army three months ago. He and his wife, the former Sharon Ellis, and their young son, Robert, returned here to reside.

The Giants defeated the Orioles Tuesday night 16-15. Ricky Clanton was the winning pitcher for the Giants and Prophet and Morgan pitched for the Orioles.

Following formal inspection of the completed construction, the Gann Ridge Road was accepted Tuesday by the State of Arkansas Highway Department and Benton County.

Little Flock Mayor J.C. McLeod has released letters he recently received from U.S. Sen. David Pryor reporting that the . U.S. Postal Service has ruled out a post office for Little Flock at the present time, but the service will "keep this under review."

The Rev. David Baker, pastor of the United Methodist Church at Brightwater and Tuck's Chapel, has been named an Outstanding Young Man of America to be listed in the 1980 edition of the book.

The Pea Ridge Park Commission received donations from Alpha Nu and Beta Alpha sororities of $227 each from the skate-a-thon and Beta Alpha's check included an extra $65 from the treasury. Virgie Hazelton presented the Beta Alpha check and Barbara Owen presented the Alpha Nu check to Bob Harp, Park Commission chairman. The contributions are earmarked for a park pavilion.

This week's TIMES was the "Pea Ridge Fair edition."

Leading the Pea Ridge Fair Parade Saturday will be retired Pea Ridge Elementary School teacher Dorothy Halvorsen, who taught second grade here for one year and first grade for 12 years. The parade will begin at the corner of Lee Town Road and Davis Street and will end at the far on the Pea Ridge High School campus.

Melanie McClain, a 1976 graduate of Pea Ridge High School, has a leading role in a new play "Geriatric Blues" which opened last week at the Eureka Springs Playhouse.

Pea Ridge School Board officials accepted bids Monday for a new school bus and a new handicap bus for $28,290 and $28,020 respectively. Bids were awarded to Wards Bus Sales.

Local patrons concerned about a tree and a band director addressed the Pea Ridge School Board Tuesday. Over the weekend, the school maintenance department cut down a large, 100-year-old oak tree on the high school campus.

The Pea Ridge Fair, which begins on July 12, will mark the first in a series of area fairs this summer at which Republican and Democrat partisans will share the same fairgrounds or other venue and work for their respective parties and political candidates.

The Rev. D. Max Whitfield, Fayetteville District superintendent, for the United Methodist Church, announced the appointment of the Rev. Donn Roach as pastor of the Centerton and Pea Ridge UMC congregations.

The Pea Ridge City Council will open bids for the city's vehicle insurance at its meeting next Tuesday, July 18, at 7 p.m. in Pea Ridge City Hall.

Eleven-year-old Teshia Watts, daughter of Michele and Michael McCool of Pea Ridge, is home after a short stay in St. John's Hospital in Joplin, Mo., where she was treated after she was swept under a low water bridge at Mustang Park in McDonald County at 5 p.m. Saturday, July 1.

Brothers John and Keith Escue crooned to the crowd as Shady Grove Bluegrass band provided the music Saturday night at the annual Pea Ridge Community Fair. Musicians included Adam Ash, Clyde Gosvener, Brad Fortner, H.K. Scott, John Escue and Keith Escue.

Taylor Long was crowned 2010 Miss Pea Ridge Wednesday evening during the opening evening of the 60th anniversary of the Pea Ridge Fair.

Mayors in Avoca, Gateway and Garfield are upset. They are made after receiving bills from the Benton County Election Commission for their towns' May 18 elections.

A group of veterans met in the middle of the afternoon Monday to discuss what they can do for their community. They are aging, but proud to have served their country and proud now to promote patriotism in Pea Ridge schools and the community.Howard Schuettpelz, commander of the FFW Post 8109, served in the U.S. Army in Vietnam. He was drafted from Wisconsin in 1968.
