Board is last stop

Reminding School Board members that they are the "last stop" not the first in addressing concerns about issues at school, attorney Marshall Nye said Monday.

Nye, an attorney with Friday, Eldridge & Clark, Rogers, counseled board members on their responsibilities and the law governing public service.

"Perception is people's reality," Nye said, reminding board members not to use cell phones during meetings. "Your power comes as a member of a team. It is important to have different points of view."

Nye when people want to talk to board members about a problem at school they want "fixed," they should be advised to take it to the teacher first, then the principal, and to realize that the board members are working for the good of the entire district, not any one student or parent.

"Y'all are volunteers; respect everyone's time in a meeting," Nye said, urging members to keep discussions on topic and to be prepared for meetings by studying agenda items before the meeting.
