RELIGION: There's value in aging

Getting older?

Everyone is. If you find yourself disheartened about the aging process, consider this enduring advice from God's Word. You'll discover how to face the coming days with His grace.

In Psalm 90, Moses, as an old man, paints a realistic picture of life for all of us who are growing older. In verse one, he says, "Lord, you have been our dwelling-place in all generations."

On the other hand, humanity sees life passing by quickly. Moses describes life like grass that sprouts in the morning but withers at night (vv. 5-8). So, Moses asks the question: "How should I live today if life is lived with a long sigh in the end?" (v.9). He answers it by saying; "So teach us to count our days that we may gain a wise heart." (v. 12) Did you notice that Moses said days not years?

So I offer an ageless principle. Since each day is a gift from God, live each one enthusiastically for Him -- not for yourself and not just for others, but for God, that you may present a heart of wisdom.

If nobody has told you lately, hear me today -- those of you in the twilight days of life, you are needed. Having gray hair (from aging) in society today is considered a drawback, a flaw, a negative point. Elders ought not be ashamed of their gray heads.

God's design is that aging is a trade off: young people do have strength and energy, but as they grow older, they become wiser (especially if they are rooted and grounded in the Word). The trade is this: that the older have wisdom with which to guide the younger, and the younger have the strength and energy to accomplish the wisdom of the elders.

Here's God's promise. You shall still bear fruit in old age. You will stay fresh and green proclaiming: "The Lord is upright. He is my Rock. There is no evil in Him" (Psalm 92:14, 15).
