Several Pea Ridge High School students won awards at the State Career Development Conference in Little Rock recently. Two of those students won first place and will represent Pea Ridge at the International Career Development Conference later this month.

Those two young ladies, Shelby Dunlap and Nicole Turner, both juniors, made their presentation to the Pea Ridge City Council Tuesday night.

"You have very colorful personalities. Don't be afraid to move," Ryan Heckman, council member, advised. "Your presentation was great!"

"I am so proud of these students and the amount of work they put into preparing for SCDC (State Career Development Conference)," teacher Tiauna Young said. "DECA is new to Pea Ridge and we are excited to watch it grow and develop into what will enhance the education of our students."

DECA -- Distributive Education Clubs of America -- is a really good opportunity for the students, Dunlap said. "It will look good on college and scholarship applications."

"It gives us hands on experience," John Calloway said. Calloway, 18, a senior, is the son of John Calloway and Mona Calloway.

Dunlap, 17, is the daughter of Kayla Dunlap and David Dunlap. Turner is the daughter of Kristi and Lance Turner.

Calloway said he plans to attend NorthWest Arkansas Community College for two years and then go to the University of Arkansas. He plans to earn a major in business administration and a minor in marketing.

Other PRHS students who placed at the conference were:

• Juniors Dunlap and Turner, first place in Fashion Merchandising Promotion Plan

• Senior Shiann Calico, third place in Independent Business Plan

• Senior Calloway, third place in Principles of Marketing

• Sophomores Garrison Artman and Jake Taylor, fourth place in Team Decision Making

• Seniors Lexie Garrett and Sarah Henderson, Fourth place in Start up Business Plan

Dunlap and Turner explained their three objectives about The Nest, a store on the high school campus -- increase the customer base by 20 percent; update their social media accounts; and reinforce the brand and really get the next community involved.

Young is the DECA advisory and small business teacher. Cathy Segur is the Pea Ridge Manufacturing and Business Academy marketing instructor.
