Band students selected to Region Honor Band

The Pea Ridge Band had 21 students selected to the A.S.B.O.A. Region 6 Honor Band and three students selected to the Region Honor Jazz Band. Among these students, six of them qualified to audition for the All-State Band and Jazz Band.

Senior Quentin Mathis and senior Garrett Lang both qualified to audition for the all-state jazz band. Mathis was selected to the all-state concert band on string bass last school year, the first all-state band student for Pea Ridge in a decade. Mathis qualified to audition for the all-state jazz band on bass guitar and Lang on baritone saxophone.

Joining Mathis and Lang in qualifying to audition for the A.S.B.O.A. All-State Concert Bands are: junior Cailey Bowie on clarinet, sophomore Laura Hume on French horn, junior Ashley Hansen on French Horn and senior Jaron Reed on bassoon. Auditions will be held Friday, Feb. 2, and Saturday, Feb. 3, at Arkansas State University in Jonesboro. They will compete with more than 1,000 students from other regions in the state for placement in one of the three honor bands and one jazz band.

Pea Ridge hosted the Region 6 honor jazz band auditions on Tuesday, Dec. 5. Freshman Layton Powell was selected to third chair in the junior high jazz band on trumpet in addition to Mathis being selected to first chair bass guitar and Lang first chair baritone saxophone in the senior high jazz band. They participated in the region jazz clinic on Dec. 8 and 9 at Rogers High School culminating in a performance on the afternoon of Dec. 9.

After the winter holiday break, the region concert band auditions were held at Harrison High School on Saturday, Jan. 13. More than 1,000 students from the region, grades 7-12 attended the auditions for placement in one of the two junior honor bands and two senior high honor bands. These Pea Ridge students, grades 7-9, were selected to the junior high first band: Morgan Humphrey, seventh chair flute; Sydney Pejsa, 23rd chair clarinet; Joseph Sanders, 25th chair clarinet; Mikayla Hammond, fifth chair alto saxophone; Layton Powell, third chair trumpet; and Jeremiah Wachtel, ninth chair trombone. Named to the second junior high band were: Christian Carreira, 26th chair clarinet; Garrett Jacobs, 11th chair trumpet; Tate Christensen, fifth chair tuba; and Elijah Hume, seventh chair percussion.

Students grade 10-12 selected to the first senior high band were: Cailey Bowie, seventh chair clarinet; Garrett Lang, first chair baritone saxophone; Jaron Reed, fourth chair bassoon; Quentin Mathis, first chair string bass; Laura Hume, fourth chair French horn; and Ashley Hansen, sixth chair French horn. Named to the second senior high band were: Stephanie Harris, eighth chair flute; Elsaysha Ewald, ninth chair flute; Joseph Gifford, 17th chair clarinet; Lucus Carreira, fifth chair bass clarinet; and Jose Zaragoza, eighth chair French horn.

These students participated in their region clinic on Jan. 19 and 20 at Bentonville West High School. They each performed that Saturday afternoon in the brand new performing arts center at the Bentonville West campus. Congratulations to these fine students on their accomplishments and good luck to the six students auditioning for the All State Band!
