Trees are valuable assets

And an investment in the future

"A society grows great when old men plant trees whose shade they know they shall never sit in." -- Greek proverb

In this instant gratification world in which we live, it's important to step back, sit down and think about our long-term investments. Wealth can be gained and lost in a day on the stock market but there's nothing man can do to speed up the growth of a tree, which in all honesty can be one of the best investments in quality of life we can make for future generations. Some benefits are obvious and others more subtle.

Shade: Cools the earth and the air around our homes.

Beauty: The structures are grand, the growth patterns are beautiful and the colors when seasons change are mother nature's artwork.

Protection: Trees provide wind breaks for homes, buildings and crops.

Stability: Roots that sink deep into the soil provide anchoring which helps prevent soil erosion.

Habitat: Insects and creatures make their homes in and on the branches of trees.

The best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago. The second best time is now. -- Chinese Proverb.

It seems the Greeks and Chinese figured out the importance of trees long ago.Trees are best planted in the fall when they can send roots down through unfrozen soil and establish themselves before winter arrives. The roots still need water though. A young tree left unwatered through the winter can suffer frozen roots if the soil, compost and water are lacking. Air can get colder than frozen water which will not be colder than 32-degrees Fahrenheit. If planting in fall, use well mulched soil and water completely to settle material all around the roots, then water a few times through the late fall. If planting in spring, make sure the tree gets plenty of water so its roots become established before the heat of the summer hits.

The shade of the tree you plant won't be yours to enjoy, but know it will be appreciated by many who come after you.
