Three of the mule owners in Saturday's 29th annual mule jump were instrumental in the foundations of the event. In 1985, Rick McCrary was presidnet of the Pea Ridge Coon Hunter's Association, and Paul Arnold was vice president. They, along with Ronnie Smith and many others, held a mule jump and coon dog hunt and show during the Fall Festival. By 1989, the event the name of the event was changed to the Pea Ridge Mule Jump. Don Slemp of Sturgeon, Mo., competed well in the barrel race Saturday.

Pea Ridge Mayor Jackie Crabtree on jenny Princess owned by Ronnie Smith of Avoca, Ark., at the 29th annual Pea Ridge Mule Jump. More than $3,500 people from several states attended the event with about $20,000 raised before subtracting expenses, according to committee chairman Nathan See, Street Dept. superintendent.
