In February 1937 Melton Barker came to northwest Arkansas to film three separate movie "shorts" styled after the popular "Our Gang" comedies (a.k.a. "Little Rascals") of the 1930s. Barker was an itinerant filmmaker from Dallas who shot the same movie, Kidnappers Foil, dozens of times from the 1930s into the early 1970s, primarily in towns throughout the southeast and midwest. Local children were cast in the movies, which were shown in local theaters. The northwest Arkansas movies, which were filmed in Fayetteville, Springdale, Rogers and Bentonville, were discovered in 2016 by Todd Terpening, who donated them to the Library of Congress where he volunteers.

The Shiloh Museum of Ozark History will host a screening of all three films at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 4, in First United Methodist Church in downtown Springdale. Several of the child actors (now in their 80s and 90s) will attend, as well as Todd Terpening, who will discuss the work of filmmaker Melton Barker and present-day efforts to find and preserve the Kidnappers Foil movies.

The screening is free. The First United Methodist Church is located at 206 W. Johnson Ave. in downtown Springdale, next door to the Shiloh Museum. For information, call the museum, 750-8165 or visit shilohmuseum.org
