Getting ready for Christmas

posted: 11/29/2017 5 a.m.

I am one of those people who embraces our new days of technology to a great extent, but retains an appreciation for the old days and some of the old-time ways of years past. This colors my approach to Christmas, and to some of the other holiday seasons as well. For example, we have just had what the business world calls Black Friday, and I think Saturday was also given a special shopping-related name. Upcoming is what is being called Cyber Monday. We hardly get into Thanksgiving, which I consider to be a great day, before we are prompted to get started on our Christmas shopping. Personally, I called off Black Friday.

The season is finally changing here in northwest Arkansas. We are feeling some rainy cooler air, and the leaves are falling. It is hard to believe, school has entered the final weeks of the second quarter and Thanksgiving is just a week away. This time of year seems to bring about some reflection as the leaves fall and the colors change. I reflect what a great area of the state we live in. It is nice to live in an area of the state that has four seasons and to be able to experience each one of them. This is a great time of year to take a drive across the Ozarks, and enjoy the crisp fall air and blue skies and experience the beauty of our region. Fall in northwest Arkansas is a beautiful time to experience the fall colors, fall activities and cool Friday night playoff football games.

Donna Brazile's new tell-all book about the circumstances surrounding the Democratic Party and the Hillary Clinton campaign may bring some much needed focus on politics. Hopefully the focus will be on all levels of "party politics" and focus not only on the DNC but the primary factors that breed the problems -- money and power. If the statement is true that "it takes money to make money," it is doubly true in the world of politics. Even though I have not read Ms. Brazile's book, I would offer it as Exhibit 1, in demonstrating the effect of money on the inside workings of a political party and the effect of outside sources on policy and candidate selection.

Thoughts on finding life interesting

posted: 11/08/2017 5 a.m.

I normally am not one to be quick to hand out advice. I am also aware that when people are bored, that often means that they are not really open to advice given by someone who proposes to remedy their boredom. This problem of being bored in life is not new. It is greatly prevalent today, even with today's vast and ever-present, ever-available entertainment options. It was also sometimes a problem in years gone by, one would think with more justification for it back then, since there were far fewer entertainment options available in those pre-electronic "dark ages." I am probably not really qualified to assess which generation had the greater problem with boredom, but my perception is that we are not making great progress today in remedying the boredom that eats away at the lives of many people.

Whether we like it or not, we have elected a most unusual individual as our nation's leader. Along with his good points however, we have to learn to accept his character flaws. He is quick to verbalize a proposed program and establish a level of expectation in the minds of those listening. However, after some thought and when he rephrases the program at a later date using a different set of parameters or objectives it can sound different. And, even the slightest changes in the headlines wordings can prompt the television commentators to quickly point out the difference and make an accusation of him lying.
