Scates offers baked goodies until garden is harvested

Jenna Scates is pretty committed to farming.

After all, she received a greenhouse as a birthday gift.

She and her husband are eager to harvest their large garden, loaded with peppers, potatoes, squash, okra, tomatoes and green beans. When she is able to share her veggies, she will sell those greens and more at the Pea Ridge Farmers Market.

Scates is a long-time vendor of the market. She loves to plant and harvest for others to enjoy.

Their rambling farm -- with fantastic views in all directions -- features four goats and 80 chickens. They also have plans for a couple of J.D. Hudson's hogs and some cattle in the future.

In the meantime, Scates utilizes her greenhouse, which also serves as a tool shed. Her husband constructed the building as a birthday, anniversary, Christmas gift.

She educated herself in organic gardening by taking a class. She also has learned other techniques, such as utilizing wood chips because their farm is too windy to mulch with straw.

The working farm is a haven of sorts for Scates. One of her favorite spots? Her swing, where she can gaze at the oak trees.

While her garden continues to grow, Scates is baking and selling a variety of cookies, including Neapolitan krispie, sweet and salty butter pecan, and white chocolate cranberry; breads such as blueberry crumb, pumpkin cheese and apple fritter; brownies and much more.

The Pea Ridge Farmers Market is located at 197 Slack St. For information, visit the market on Facebook.
