Emma Avenue Photo Exhibit May 16

The Changing Face of Emma, a photographic look at Springdale's first commercial district, opens Tuesday, May 16, at the Shiloh Museum of Ozark History. The exhibit explores downtown Springdale's Emma Avenue from its heyday to decline to present-day rejuvenation. The Changing Face of Emma will be on display through Dec. 9.

Creator of Artificial Fruit holds discussion

Toinette Madison, director of the Boone County Historical Museum in Harrison, will discuss "Lizzie Rubart Gibson: Fruit Modeler," at noon Wednesday, May 17, in the Shiloh Museum of Ozark History.

"In the late 1800s and early 1900s, Illinois native Lizzie Rubart Gibson gained national notoriety with her artistic abilities and self-developed methods in creating artificial fruit," explained Madison. "She was drawn to northwest Arkansas during the heyday of the region's fruit industry in the early 1900s and lived for several years in the Boone County community of Batavia, where she created and sold artificial fruit until her death in 1927," Madison said.

Children invited to native plants program

Children of all ages are invited to come get their hands dirty during a program about native plants at 10 a.m. Saturday, May 20, in the Shiloh Museum of Ozark History. Participants will make seed balls filled with flower seeds to take home and plant. The program is part of the museum's Third Saturday series for families.

Butterfly Gardens on program

Members of Springdale for Monarchs, a community group dedicated to saving the monarch butterfly, will present a program on the life cycle and migration of the monarch butterfly at 1 p.m. Saturday, May 20, in the Shiloh Museum of Ozark History.

Shiloh Museum summer camps have openings

Openings are still available for the Shiloh Museum of Ozark History's summer camps for children. Campers will explore the intersection of science and history through hands-on activities and crafts related to photography, water, trees and inventions. Snacks are provided for both camps; lunch is provided for campers attending Session II.

Session I, for ages 7-10, takes place from 9--11:30 a.m. June 19--23; cost is $30 for museum members; $40 for nonmembers.

Session II, for ages 11-14, takes place from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. July 10-14; cost is $45 for museum members; $55 for nonmembers.

Space is limited for both camps; preregistration and payment is required. A limited number of scholarships are available. The registration deadline is May 31 or when camps are full. For more information, call Shiloh Museum education manager Judy Costello, 750-8165, or email [email protected].

LifeWriters to meet
